What to Expect Once You Schedule Your First Appointment

  • Session 1

Our first session will be our assessment session where I will learn more about your child, you  and your current situation. We will start to talk about your goals, and I will start to explain how I can specifically help.

  • Session 2

We will continue our assessment in the second session with our main focus being on learning about the presenting symptoms, the treatment approach and treatment planning. We will work together to create specific steps on how we can achieve your goals. I will start to clearly outline what you can expect going forward, as well as provide you with actionable steps you can start implementing!

At JP Counseling Services we understand the challenges that come with trying to navigate daily life while fighting anxiety, trauma, and other stressors.
  • Session 3 +

We start our work! Whether we are addressing OCD, anxiety, or trauma we will begin our gradual process in supporting you in creating the life you want to live. For parents of children and teens, session 3 is when I spend more time with you - the parent - offering tools and strategies to start implementing.

I understand, each individual has their own unique needs, so this may look different for each person. However, our goal is to start implementing skills as soon as possible so that you begin your journey to peace!

  • Maintenance Sessions

There is no specific timeline for how long therapy lasts. However, within a few months you or your child may start to experience relief. As a therapist, the one thing I cannot guarantee is that all troubles and issues will go away. However, I can support you and your family in getting to a place where these stressors become manageable and less impairing. As goals are achieved and progress is maintained we can consider reducing the frequency of our sessions. This allows you and your family to continue implementing all the skills you have learned, while still having support with me as unexpected stressors or challenges arise. We will work together to determine what this looks like.

  • Additional Support

The struggles your child is facing may be impacting additional areas of his or her life, such as school, sports or other extra curricular activities. As a young adult, your struggles may impact other areas such as relationships with others or even work. With your consent, I am able to meet with these identified individuals or places so they can learn how to support progress. Coordinating care like this allows your environment to adapt and learn how to best support your child and you along your journey.

  • Intensives - Extended Sessions

Intensive sessions are select, specialized and limited prolonged sessions that occur typically once a month. These sessions range from 90 mins to 2 hours, can be in the office or in the community (for OCD exposures). OCD/anxiety intensives are designed to support children and young adults with more severe symptoms, individuals who are stepping down from a higher level of care, and for those who are just needing more focused exposure work. Trauma intensives are designed to support young adults struggling with PTSD and allow more time for processing the traumatic event. Incorporating intensives into your treatment plan provides opportunity to navigate complex exposures, accelerates treatment gains in a highly meaningful way, fosters a stronger therapeutic relationship, and is highly effective in helping children and young adults achieve lasting change.
